Douglas Coupland Orca Sculpture

Douglas Coupland Orca Sculpture

Douglas Coupland (our favourite author) has made this sculpture of an Orca at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Looks a bit like Lego. Coupland is in the news lately - he's also just developed a clothing line for Roots based on (what else?) the SMPTE test pattern.

Twist Together Lights

TwistTogether Light

These TwistTogether lights from Glide can be configured in many ways and come in either candy or chocolate colours. The lights are LEDs so they are low power and cool. They're dinky - about four inches square. Here's a picture of an installation of the lights as a tree. Available for about USD 100 from Velocity.

Relive The World Cup In Lego

World Cup hilights in Lego

The World Cup has lost a bit of its interest for us here at yaean towers since England got shown the door by The Germans. Still we can re-live the the high-lights and lo-lights in glorious Lego colour with a series of animations commissioned by The Guardian called Brick-by-Brick. The animations are produced by Fabian Moritz who is behind the site Legofussball.eu. Unfortunately embedding has been disabled on the 2010 England/Germany match up on YouTube, so here's England's marvellous victory from 1966.

Lego Printer

Lego Printer

This Lego printer recently appeared on YouTube from user horseattack. He made it from scratch using four motors, a wiring demo board and a felt-tip pen. It prints about 75 DPI at 0 PPM. He also wrote drivers for the Mac. Very cool.

Lego Commuter Train

Lego commuter train

This Lego model of a commuter train has automatic doors and a step that slide open so the little Lego commuters can get to work or go home. It's got front and interior lights. And the whole thing is three detailed carriages long. Even better than the real thing! A marvellous achievement from Esben Kolind. More pics here.

A video is embedded below from YouTube.
