Douglas Coupland Orca Sculpture |
Douglas Coupland (our favourite author) has made this sculpture of an Orca at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Looks a bit like Lego. Coupland is in the news lately - he's also just developed a clothing line for Roots based on (what else?) the SMPTE test pattern. |

Pixelated Sculpture |
Shawn Smith makes these incredible pixelated sculptures of real things - exploring the intersection of reality and the digital world. The sculptures are built by hand from 1/2 inch strips of plywood or MDF - the strips themselves are hand dyed with ink and acrylic paint to give a large palette. A video of the artist explaining the work is here. |

Glass Sculptures |
Shayna Leib makes beautiful organic sculptures out of glass inspired by nature. The painstaking process, which she describes on here site, involves hand pulling the coloured glass into canes which are then molded and cut to length. Lovely. See also Pencil Sculptures. |

Pencil Sculptures |
Jennifer Maestre makes sculptures from pencils. The sculptures are made by beading 1 inch long pencils that have a hole drilled in them - mostly with the peyote stitch. The sculptures were originally inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin. See also pencil shoes. |

Really Real Time Clock |
Standard Time is a 24 hour film of 70 workers building a digital clock. Shot in real-time it it shows the workers trying hard to construct every single minute - constantly on the verge of failing. Standard Time is available as an application for Mac/PC which syncs playback to the local computer's clock - thereby giving you a 24-hour movie clock. |

Very Slow Scan TV |
Slow Scan Television (SSTV), an image transmission system used by Ham Radio amateurs. Very Slow Scan TV (VSSTV) uses SSTV to transmit a signal to an inkjet plotter which injects the ink into large rolls of bubble wrap. Turning each bubble into a pixel. 3D TV has arrived!
