Arup's Bug Hotel |
The Voronoi Diagram appears again in this bug hotel from Arup. Designed for the Beyond the Hive Competition, sponsored by the City of London. The hotel encourages occupancy by all kinds of creepy crawlies, including stag beetles, solitary bees, butterflies, moths, spiders, lacewings and ladybirds. A variety of recycled waste materials and deadfall are loosely inserted into the cells for the insects to make their homes. See the other entrants on the competition web site. See also Voronoi Diagram As Chair. |

Solid Wood Light |
This light (called Cub) was designed by Julian Robin. It looks like a solid block of wood until the light is switched on. Then it glows softly and shows shadows of leaves. Lovely. Available from the Hix store for Euro 290. |

Wooden CNC Machine |
This wooden CNC machine was designed and built by Nick Santillan after he gave up trying to build a different one from a kit. It has some unique features: like being able to bolt the whole machine on to the surface being worked on (a table, a wall...). It's a great achievement. There are some beautiful pieces on Nick's site like DotDot - interactive furniture for kids - well worth a look. |
