Shoot The CD |
For the packaging of the Planet, Planet CD by Elyjah German designers Zwölf fired pellets into the covers. Included in the package are pictures of the band dressed as if they're on a hunt in the 1920s. They also used old fonts: Memphis, from Emil Rudolph Weiß (1929) and the Wieynck Gotisch from Heinrich Wieynck (1926) - which were printed on an old Heidelberg printing machine. The video of Wired Song by Elyjah is embedded below from YouTube. |

Analogue Digital CD |
Yuri Suzuki has collaborated with DJ Jeff Mills to produce a CD which is both analogue and digital. One side is a normal digital CD. The other side is a vinyl pressing which can be played on a record player. Remember them? The disc was produced by optimal media in Germany and is available for purchase for USD 35 from Axis Records. The ideal gift for those who complain digital does not have the warmth of analogue! A YouTube video of the prototype is embedded below. |

Packaging As Music |
Tristan Perich explores the relationship between music and its packaging in his 1 Bit Symphony project. The symphony is packaged in a CD jewel case but it is not a recording. The chip inside the case generates the music as a series of (1-bit) square waves. Even though he is using a simple form of sound wave he still manages to produce complex musical movements. Available for pre-order at Bang on a Can for USD 29. Video of the project is embedded below from Vimeo. |

Cardboard Record Player |
This cardboard record player was created by Grey Canada for GGRP (a sound engineering firm) as a direct mailer to showcase their capabilities. The whole thing is a single piece of cardboard which folds into an envelope. The cardboard packaging acts as a loud speaker too. Via Ads of the World. |

Scratch-off CD Packaging |
The packaging for the MSVICA CD comes with a yellow tiddlywink so you can scratch off the gold latex panels that cover the text on the packaging. The concept being that the packaging of the CD evolves over time as does the music on the CD. More photos on Flickr. The CD is available from Fine Art Recordings web shop. Rorschach CD Packaging |
Every so often you see something in packaging that you've never seen before. This CD packaging contains ink that is released when you open the packaging, the ink forms a blot on the cover that is unique to each opening. Very cool! The packaging was designed by Hubero Kororo for Uceroz. Uceroz is a new music brand by Ivan Palacký, a musician playing an amplified knitting machine called Dopleta 160 (180). Reviews of the music at The Watchful Ear and Just Outside. Vimeo video embedded below. |

Beatles Visualisation |
Charting The Beatles is a project to visualize various bits of information about The Beatles. It's interesting to see how things change over time. For example, their use of musical keys over different albums. Sgt. Pepper's and Magical Mystery, both from 1967, seem to have the most variety in terms of key. |

In 2010 the Royal Mail will be releasing a series of stamps based on classic album covers from British artists. Creative Review has lots of pictures of the stamps. Oddly no Beatles albums make it in to the set. The stamps were designed by Studio Dempsey. At some point in the stamps should also appear on the Royal Mail's web site. Stamp Albums. |
