Bamboo German-Chinese House At Shanghai Expo

Bamboo German-Chinese House at Shanghai Expo 2010

For the Shanghai Expo Markus Heinsdorff designed a bamboo structure that is used as an exhibition and event space. It is the only two-storey building at the Expo whose load-bearing structures are made of bamboo. The structure marks the end of the German-Chinese project 'Germany and China, moving ahead together' which was initiated by the Goethe Institute in Beijing. The building is an artistic encounter with the theme of sustainable urbanisation, which was the focus of the German-Chinese project. The German-Chinese architecture practice MUDI in Shanghai was responsible for the planning and approval process. More pics at arch daily.

Mobius Love Seat

Moebius armchair

This armchair is inspired by the Möbius strip. It's called Moebius and is made by Onyx in Thailand from eco friendly rattan and water hyacinth. (They also make furniture out of bamboo.) It's a classic love seat - in which the occupants face each other. The Moebius is part of their Sphere collection - which includes many pieces based on mathematical shapes.

Bamboo And Silk Furniture

Cocoon from Yii Design

Yii Design in Taiwan have a new collection which includes the amazing Cocoon Plan: Sofa. The structure is constructed by intertwining bamboo strips to make the underlying form. Silk worms are then introduced to the base and start spinning. After five days the bamboo form is cocooned in their natural silk.

Bamboo Wind Powered Lights

Flow is a public lighting system by igenworks made from a bamboo wind turbine. The turbine powers LED lights at the ends of the blades which turn in the wind producing an every changing pattern. The turbine itself has a backbone like structure which enables it to be powered by wind from any direction.
