Arup's Bug Hotel |
The Voronoi Diagram appears again in this bug hotel from Arup. Designed for the Beyond the Hive Competition, sponsored by the City of London. The hotel encourages occupancy by all kinds of creepy crawlies, including stag beetles, solitary bees, butterflies, moths, spiders, lacewings and ladybirds. A variety of recycled waste materials and deadfall are loosely inserted into the cells for the insects to make their homes. See the other entrants on the competition web site. Bamboo German-Chinese House At Shanghai Expo |
For the Shanghai Expo Markus Heinsdorff designed a bamboo structure that is used as an exhibition and event space. It is the only two-storey building at the Expo whose load-bearing structures are made of bamboo. The structure marks the end of the German-Chinese project 'Germany and China, moving ahead together' which was initiated by the Goethe Institute in Beijing. The building is an artistic encounter with the theme of sustainable urbanisation, which was the focus of the German-Chinese project. The German-Chinese architecture practice MUDI in Shanghai was responsible for the planning and approval process. More pics at arch daily. |

Ken Burns (Wikipedia) made a documentary about Frank Lloyd Wright for PBS which includes the clip below of Edgar Tafel, one of FLW's apprentices, talking about the process of how the original drawings were made. Once FLW had got the commission from Kaufmann he visited the site and asked his apprentices to make detailed drawings… |
